Careers at The SF Electric Company

Build the protection layer for 800 VDC infrastructure.

We are building the power infrastructure that will support the intelligence of the coming decade. It is an immense technical challenge: Hephaestus must move from electrical architecture to validated, certified pilot hardware on an unforgiving timeline.

We are a small team, which means every person owns critical work and every week matters. If high stakes, hard physics, and end-to-end responsibility bring out your best, join us. This may be the hardest work of your career and the most rewarding.

We work in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Consequential hardware, built from first principles.

Hephaestus combines isolation, precharge, discharge, sensing, and solid-state fault interruption in one repeatable assembly. This is physical infrastructure. The work happens in schematics, firmware, thermal models, supplier reviews, laboratories, and hardware.

Open roles

Founding engineers own systems end-to-end and stay close to the hardware through validation.

Power stage

Founding Power Electronics Engineer

Own the power-stage architecture for Hephaestus, from device selection and gate drive through commutation, transient control, and fault interruption.

You have built and tested high-power converters, solid-state breakers, industrial drives, or comparable power-electronic systems. You are comfortable with high-energy testing, instrumentation, failure analysis, schematic capture, layout review, and component suppliers.

Electrical system

Founding High-Voltage Electrical Engineer

Own the safe integration of the complete feeder: insulation coordination, grounding, bus structures, disconnects, precharge and discharge paths, backup protection, interlocks, and test procedures.

You have designed in the 800–1,000 VDC class and can translate applicable UL and IEC requirements into hardware, documentation, and validation plans.

Control and protection

Founding Embedded Controls Engineer

Build the deterministic control system behind Hephaestus: operating-state sequencing, sensor acquisition, trip logic, interlocks, diagnostics, event capture, and equipment communications.

You have shipped real-time embedded systems where timing, fault behavior, and traceable verification matter. Hardware-in-the-loop testing, fault injection, and safety-oriented control are especially relevant.

Physical architecture

Founding Mechanical/Thermal Engineer

Own the enclosure, component and busbar packaging, cold plates, coolant distribution, structural design, service access, and manufacturing readiness.

You have designed liquid-cooled power equipment or similarly dense industrial hardware and can balance electrical clearance, pressure drop, thermal performance, assembly, serviceability, and supplier capability.

How we work

The team is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and works primarily on-site. These roles involve regular work with physical hardware, laboratories, manufacturing partners, and high-voltage test equipment.

What to send

Email the role, your résumé or LinkedIn profile, and two or three projects that show what you personally designed, built, tested, or shipped. No formal cover letter is required.
